SURAH ASH-SHAMS: AYAT 1 (QURAN 91:1)

A radiant titan in the vast expanse of space, the Sun reigns as the heart of our solar system, a celestial beacon of light and energy that shapes the rhythm of life on Earth. Its fiery embrace fuels the winds, feeds the oceans, and ignites the brilliance of every dawn and dusk. A cosmic alchemist, it forges elements in its core, its fusion-powered heartbeat pulsing with a force that has captivated poets, dreamers, and scientists for centuries. More than a distant star, it is the silent architect of existence, a reminder that even in the deepest darkness, there is always light.

At the Sun’s core, hydrogen undergoes nuclear fusion, where immense pressure and temperatures—reaching about 15 million degrees Celsius—force hydrogen atoms to merge, forming helium. This fusion process releases an extraordinary amount of energy, which radiates outward, fueling the Sun’s brilliance and sustaining life on Earth.

Surah Ash-Shams, the 91st Surah of the Quran, translates to “The Sun” in English. It is a powerful surah that emphasizes the contrast between light and darkness, purity and corruption, and the importance of self-purification. The surah begins with a series of divine oaths, invoking celestial bodies such as the Sun and the Moon, highlighting their order and harmony as signs of Allah’s supreme wisdom. Thus, Surah Ash-Shams stands as a timeless testament to the consequences of human actions, urging mankind to embrace righteousness and avoid the fate of those who succumbed to their lower desires. It is a call to enlightenment, a beacon of divine wisdom, guiding souls toward eternal success in both this life and the hereafter.

Amazingly the Surah in the Quran named “The Sun” is the only Surah in the Quran in which every verse (Ayah) ends in the Arabic letter “هـ” commonly regarded as “H” and pronounced as “Ha” – The symbol for the predominant compositions of that very sun. The Sun, a colossal sphere of scorching plasma, is primarily composed of hydrogen (H) and helium (He), the two lightest elements in the universe. Hydrogen dominates, making up approximately 92% of the Sun’s atoms and around 71% of its total mass. Helium, the second most abundant element, accounts for 8.7% of the Sun’s atoms and roughly 27.1% of its mass. An amazing sign for those that will ponder.

In Surah Fussilat (Quran 41:53) – Allah (swt) says: We will show them Our signs in the universe and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that this ˹Quran˺ is the truth. Is it not enough that your Lord is a Witness over all things?
